| Raging Hormones? Help is on the Way!
It's not easy being a woman.
For many, monthly cycles involve cramping, bloating, irritability and soreness. As we approach middle age, things change, and often not for the better.
It can happen to a woman any time from the age of 34 to 45, and it can last up to ten years or longer. It is not fun, in fact it can drive you crazy. What is it? The answer: Perimenopause.
It doesn't have to be this way, really. We can support our bodies with natural compounds that will help equalize the hormonal upsurges and downswings that create both of these conditions, PMS and perimenopause.
By the age of forty, estrogen levels in many women begin to decline. They don't always do so in a discrete, even-handed way. Levels of estrogen can fluctuate dramatically and cause chaos in our mood and our menstrual cycles, and correspondingly in our lives.
The quick fix that is often offered to us is to go on "the pill", but as you already know, I don't bargain with quick fixes. I find that most often they come with repercussions, later on down the line, that usually cause greater harm than the initial situation presented in the first place.
For many women, the solution comes easily from the herbal kingdom. Below are my favorites, they help most hormonal imbalances that result in PMS symptoms and perimenopausal conditions.
First, it is critical that you have a hearty intake of omega-3 fats. These lubricate many body systems, and make everything run more efficiently, hormones being no exception. Here you can go with Eskimo-3 Natural Stable Fish Oil Supplement or Organic High Lignan Flax Seed Oil.
Next a big favorite of mine:
Liquid Chasteberry Extract. Sometimes known as Vitex, this herb enjoys a reputation for balancing hormones, regulating menstrual cycles and relieving symptoms of PMS. Vitex works on the pituitary gland, which is responsible for signaling the body to make the appropriate amounts of each hormone, therefore, it helps to bring balance at the core of the issue. Vitex is one of the best herbs for balancing hormones, regulating menstrual cycles and relieving symptoms of PMS.
Thirdly: Calcium. While calcium is important to women for so many reasons, it is of vital significance in easing cramps associated with menstruation. Calcium levels may be lower in women with PMS and some researchers believe PMS symptoms are actually the result of low calcium levels (hypocalcemia). Symptoms of low calcium include fatigue, anxiety, depression, memory problems, personality changes, neuromuscular irritability, and muscle cramps — symptoms nearly identical to PMS.
Finally, for many women soy assists in maintaining a healthy estrogen balance. Our
Equilibrium, by NF Formulations, contains 330 mg. of soy protein plus herbal notables such as dong quai and wild yam.
Time to get off that rollercoaster and enjoy being a woman again!
